What would you do if your young child had questions about slavery?  Most parents would go to the library or (in the age of electronic media), research it on the computer.  D. Marie decided to write a children's book after she could not find a book that could adequately answer that question for her child.  Hence, the background for the company and the book.

     Although D. Marie considered this a burning question in 1988, years of teaching since then have convinced her that it remains a burning question today and that early exposure provides them a foundation for mature discussions in the future.
